It will also be the first video game to feature the voice talents of the five starring captains from all five series: William Shatner (James T. Kirk), Patrick Stewart (Jean-Luc Picard), Avery Brooks (Benjamin Sisko), Kate Mulgrew (Kathryn Janeway), and Scott Bakula (Jonathan Archer).[1]
Single player
The three eras of Star Trek: Enterprise, The Original Series and The Next Generation make up the single-player campaign. In each era the Federation goes up against the Romulans (ENT), Klingons (TOS) and the Borg Collective (TNG). The Next Generation era also includes Deep Space Nine and Voyager.
According to the February 2006 issue of Game Informer magazine, the story ties in with the events seen in The Next Generation episode "Contagion". Prior to the discovery of the portal in that episode, a Vulcan archaeologist by the name of Sovak attempts to bring about a utopia of logic and uses the Iconian technology to try to achieve what he believes is a noble cause. Things go from bad to worse when the Borg assimilate the Iconian technology and it requires every captain from every era together to defeat the 'Iconian-Borg abomination'. It should be noted that the game is still early in development.
In an interview on GameSpot posted on July 19, 2006, it was revealed that the "Contagion" story arc is no longer relevant to the plot. Instead the creators state that the method of spanning the various eras is far more ingenious and was developed by one of the original Star Trek writers.[2]
The eras that will be covered in single player mode are:
- Jonathan Archer (Enterprise)
- James Kirk (Original Series era)
- James Kirk (Movie era)
- Jean-Luc Picard (Enterprise-D - TNG and Generations)
- Jean-Luc Picard (Enterprise-E - movies after First Contact)
- Kathryn Janeway (Star Trek Voyager series)
- Benjamin Sisko (Star Trek Deep Space Nine series)
An article on Eurogamer, posted on August 7, 2006, revealed that the original Star Trek writer in question was D.C. Fontana who, along with partner Derek Chester, has collaborated on the scripts of Star Trek: Legacy and Star Trek: Tactical Assault.[3]
Combat for the game takes place in a 3D environment similar to Star Trek: Bridge Commander, but also adds more realism through advanced graphics. According to the game designers at an E3 video interview, players will also have to ability to change from a 3D display to a top-down 2D tactical display where you can issue specific commands to ships within a task force. For example, a player will be able to order a Galaxy Class ship to warp to a specific point for defense of a station or ship.
In addition to the linear campaign there is set to be a fully customizable skirmish mode.
